  1. You are a cruel woman, Panto. Posting a photo of Pepper, who would be a perfect addition to my household. Coats look great. Hard and exhausting work volunteering time and effort for the poundies, but supremely rewarding. Well done.
  2. Pardon me while I try to stop laughing before I start crying. Nice thought, Loreley, but it has taken decades of hard work by dedicated people to get some pounds to desex their dogs and cats prior to adoption. Just think of the money and lives that would have been saved had that been brought in years ago. I saw a great car sticker the other day: Dogs can't vote Dog lovers can.
  3. Isn't RADAR down that way? Have a look on the PetRescue site; there is a list of all the rescuers and rescue groups. If you foster for an ethical and reputable group all legalities should be taken care of by them.
  4. Dropped in to Sew Make Create with a couple of bags of towels and trackies. Met Pepper - even more gorgeous than her poster. Unfortunately, she was on a lead and being very closely monitored. I did offer to take her for a walk and that kind kind offer was declined. Why, I ask. Do I look like a dognapper   Both lovely Pantos were there: two legged one and four legged one. A large contingent of trackie cutters was hard at it when I left, so there are going to be some very warm and happy pound pets before too long. Didn't meet any DOLers, but K9Angel had obviously worked very hard to get supplies of her delicious hand made doggy treats available.
  5. In the case of May you mentioned in your post, Mita, Hawkesbury pound allowed a rescuer come in to assess her. If other shelters worked with rescuers and volunteers like Nic, they'd all be better places. The dog in Logan Pound may have had health issues that to allow her to continue would have been cruel. However, if this article is totally correct, they are simply parroting policy without any consideration for the people who really care and are entitled to a bit more than spiel. These organisations are paid out of our taxes and I believe we need better explanations of why actions are taken instead of what has appeared in this article.
  6. I am not commenting on this case specifically, Mita, and unless one was there, I don't believe one can. However, as I mentioned in another thread, sometimes people whom we trust to be doing so are not acting in an animal's best interest. More so they are sometimes acting in their own interests and motivated sometimes out of spite and self promotion. Sad but true. I think a lot of people who have been involved with pounds and rescue organisations would, if they were being honest, agree with that. I have had experiences with pounds such as Renbury who will let dogs go to people they know will do everything in their power to ensure the dog's best interests are met. Most of these dogs would never ever pass muster or be given a chance at other places. But because Renbury people know the rescuers and care about the dogs who come into their facility, these dogs are given a chance to live out their lives in comfort, vet treated, full tummies and lots of love. Sadly, I have seen decisions made by vets working for shelters which horrify me. One such is that a vet assessed a little Pomeranian as having "the worse case of luxating patella" she'd ever seen and would only pass her for rescue if she was operated on immediately. That dog not have luxating patella, but worse in terms of a veterinary diagnosis, the dog's knees were fused, probably from birth. She was as happy a dog you'd want to find, no pain, no problem, just a funny walk. I'm afraid my experiences over the years have made me very cynical.
  7. Here we go. Media beat up. Frankly, I find it hard to not get passionate about someone being bailed up by several large dogs. Hard to imagine a much more terrifying situation. What a shame the man wasn't mauled to death, then maybe it would be worth getting a bit heated and passionate about it, hey? Why don't you try it and see how you fare. Good point but not admissible in Court based on the evidence presented here. It could have been set up. Maybe he hurt his arm somewhere else, knew the dogs, and is stiching someone up to pay the costs. Huh

  9. I sometimes wonder if people who come in and post on these dog attack threads have ever witnessed an attack and/or ever been attacked or seen the results of an attack. So often these threads disintegrate into name calling, protesting what breed the dogs are, whether they were serious, etc etc etc. To the poster who said the injuries didn't look serious, well words fail me. Even if a person hasn't been bitten, can you try to imagine how totally terrifying it would be to be bailed up by one large dog, let alone 4. Regarding injuries: I was bitten by a Maltese Cross some years ago. I had on a long sleeved cuffed jacket and was bitten through that. Even with that protection, my wrist required seven stitches and I still have the scars, and probably always will have, from several punture marks. And this was a Maltese Cross. I hate to think what my wrist would have been like had the dog been a large breed and totally out of control like the poor little dog was. As for people who stand by and watch, I have witnessed that, not heard it second or third hand and to this day, I will never understand. I won't go into all the details and ramifications, but briefly an assistance dog was attacked by a Rottweiler on the footpath outside my house in Summer Hill. The owner of the Rottweiler stood in her front yard and watched it while the owner of the assistance dog and her adult son tried to hold their dog away from the Rottweiler and screamed for help. Other neighbours across the road just stood watching. Can you imagine what those people went through, the woman was blind FFS!!! And no one came to help until I heard the commotion and went to see what was going on. I did intervene, absolutely terrified, got the Rottweiler off the Golden and took the people to the emergency vet at Strathfield. The next time I saw a Rottweiler, I nearly fainted LOL. Not telling this story to self aggrandise as some might want to suggest, just to say that I've seen the lack of response first hand and it is a damned horrible thing to know that people are like that.
  10. My thanks too, to the people who made May's last few days comfortable, warm, well fed, worthwhile and respected. Thanks to Nic for giving us all such an invaluable insight to her last days and to the way Hawkesbury people treat "their" dogs. No doubt, Kelpiecuddles, you will shed a little tear for "what might have been", but without your intervention, questions and interest, May might have been just another statistic and Nic might not have gone to assess her today and by doing so has made her an ongoing part of the DOL awareness and education. The only thing sad about this story is the past. As Mita says, hopefully her legacy will be that more people realise the value and worth of elderly dogs and go out of their way to help them. RIP Beautiful May.
  11. A long hair Corgi - how very beautiful if that doggie!
  12. Thank you for going out to meet her Nic, look forward to an update :) Me too. it is all positive.
  13. If she hates female with beards, stop taking her to the circus then. Problem solved! In all seriousness, if I had a visitor whom one of my dogs disliked to the point of nipping, I'd be putting the dog in another room or outside. If I were a visitor to someone who had a dog who was growling and nipping at me and the person did nothing to restrain the dog, I would not be visiting LOL. As W Sibs said: if it happened very occasionally, I'd be worried about the person.
  14. Bless you Sheridan for your usual constructive, supportive, positive, caring and nourishing posting. You are an example to us all. Providing a once off $100 to someone rescueing a dog is helpful but only in the short term. You may not like that but it's the truth. You're going to be all 'I helped kelpiecuddles rescue this dog!' but it's not you who are going to be left with the vet bills. It is obvious from her posts, that Kelpiecuddles is fully cognizant of the pitfalls of veterinary bills and is seeking as much information as she can prior to making any decisions. Very wise. So why be so negative? Just because you have incurred vet bills that have taken a while to pay off doesn't mean someone else can't rescue a dog. And yes, of my 18,927 posts in the over 10 years of been a member of DOL (now 18928 with this one), I think 18,925 of them have been bragging about how I donated to save a dog's life. Oh, I wasn't being negative about kelpiecuddles, I was being negative about you. I know - it has been so for many years and, you want to know something, I couldn't care less except it becomes soooooo boring. I will continue to help where I can and be supportive and positive if I can. Unlike you.

  16. I don't want to take the thread off track, but Little Gifts has brought up a point, the importance of which, is hard to over-emphasise: that is the importance of people forming relationships and bypassing the divisive animosities and "divide and rule" policies that sometimes exist at the top of any organisation.
  17. We need Iggy Rescue to get to work on Iggy Mum so she can get all healed and happy as well

  19. I pledge $100 for Kelpiecuddles to take him on. Anyone else :D .
  20. Just perfect! So good to see organisations working together to ensure the wellbeing and happiness of a little dog.
  21. As Aphra has posted. I hope you can get it sorted quickly. Are you away from home through the day, or is the dog with you most of the time?
  22. Do you want to rephrase that? Those two are really beautiful, LG. Tempeh seems to have another dog's front legs ?? TEMPEH
  23. What fun they are having You must have had a slight panic the first time you saw her, though: OMG! She's drowning. Many years ago, I had a little dog who used to "bite" at the water. I discovered it when I watered the garden, so I'd flick the hose from side to side and she would be chasing the water, leaping up, snapping at it and shrieking with delight like a little child. God knows what anyone hearing it thought I'd be exhausted long before Flora was ready to stop. Love those big beautiful Rotties
  24. Fantastic K. OT: You probably don't go into the Pregnant thread in Off Topic, but Rappie's baby is sick in hospital. He is on the improve though. I'm sure she could do with some DOL support vibes :)
