This sort of indulgence really annoys me, too. I have a tiny little dog (3.5kg) who is very reactive and whenever I see dogs coming towards us when we are out walking, I will shorten her lead and distract her with treats. If that doesn't work and she "goes off her rocker", people always laugh their heads off. A couple of times over the years, I've said: you wouldn't be laughing if she was a Rottweiler or similar. They just don't get it. That said, a trainer should get it and should be instructing the owners of the little dogs (and children) accordingly.

45 minutes of talking and expecting puppies to be quiet Crazy. I'd be talking to the trainer and investigating somewhere new. Madness for sure, but controlled and directed madness

Anxiety In A Rescue Dog
Loving my Oldies replied to Michelleva's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Not just too tired from the exercise, but also satisfied and tired from all the sensory experiences she would have had, making for one happy dog. You say she is different from when she came to you, so look at it this way. She came into your life shut down and afraid. Because you loved and cared for her so much she very quickly came to trust you and to allow herself to be her natural self. Suddenly, all that is gone and she is with new people and although she'd met them and seemed fine with them, she wasn't to understand that she was going to be left with them. For whatever reason, these new people were not able to understand her needs and, in their ignorance, have made her fearful and stressed. She is now back with you and she is probably worried sick that she is suddenly going to be sent off somewhere new again. You will have to provide her with a great deal of reassurance without exacerbating the separation anxiety - not an easy task, but not impossible. When she comes up to you talk to her, tell her how beautiful and special she is while still going about whatever you are doing. She needs to be reassured that she is still part of the family and the families activities without a great fuss being made of her. You succeeded brilliantly the first time and I know you will do so again. -
Anxiety In A Rescue Dog

Only three ??  I came back into this thread to suggest this and found T had already done it . Yep, just go back to the beginning and this time everything will fall very quickly back into place. I think this sounds the right way to go. -
Well that's plain silly. There have been photos, there have been statements by the zoo, there have been witnesses to what happened. I think there has been certainly plenty of details made public to allow people to make their own judgements. I also find the necessity for comparisons strange, that is the comparison between what happened at the zoo and what happens in livestock farming, in laboratories, etc etc. Why cannot something be judged on its own and found to be wrong or right or unnecessary or whatever. The majority of decent caring people have found this whole thing abhorrent - why then doe people find it necessary to start pushing other sorts of killings at them. Probably many people find all the other sorts of animal slaughter abhorrent as well. Why are there any number of animals rights organisations and vegans and vetarians. Comparisons are just so much muddying of the waters. Let's just judge this one occurrence on its own merits.

Considering lots of people with their children watched this barbaric "event", and some posters have said they would watch with their children, I can only assume that if it were a money maker, it could well and truly happen. What about that thread recently of the woman who kills animals all over the world and the people/organisation who defended and arranged for these killings? Let's face it, people in various parts of the world gather throughout the year to watch and bet on bear baiting, dog fights, rooster fights, badger hunts, fox hunts, etc etc etc. Just consider ourselves fortunate that we live in a country where, despite the fact that some of these ghastly things still happen, animal cruely is against the law and people can be prosecuted. Just scratch the surface of so-called civilisation . . . . Be ever vigilant because no doubt someone will pop up to say that we are denying people their "rights" if we don't allow these things to happen and, again, if there is money to be made all sorts of decencies fly out the window.
-
That's such a specious argument and along the lines of "guns don't kill people . . . . . " The "event" is certainly garnering a lot of attention and I doubt (and hope) it will be a long time before something like this ghastly behaviour is made a public spectacle again. Are humans the only animal in earth who gather around to watch the killing of another in the interests of entertainment? Oh, sorry - this was educational and done so children could see the insides of an animal.

Oncologist Recommendations In Sydney
Loving my Oldies replied to Dave73's topic in General Dog Discussion
I hope this is the beginning of a new life for you and Jazz. I was thinking of you on Saturday and trying to remember the name of your specialist because SASH had a stall and one of the vets had a presentation. -
I'll have to dig out some pix of a visit to the beach at Newport. At the time I had a tiny little black and white Papillon x Chihuahua - he had the best time. Then we met on the beach a black and white Great Dane. Bit of a contrast I used to have a little dog who would run at the ripples and try to bite them, squealing with joy. She used to do the same with water from the hose which I'd flick from side to side. She loved it. Dogs are dogs no matter what their size. Same as little dogs will hoe into the biggest bone with great gusto.

I'm not surprised. Some of the posts would scare off the most committed of persons.

Are you taking Penny?  No. Too many dogs and seriously she is not taking to the leash yet...she rolls around. I did take her outside to try and demonstrate the point of it and she walked back to the front door...first time proper walking She flies around the unit trying to get it off. Oh but she's beautiful. She's allowed to fly.  -

Not sure if same dog, but there was a lovely big blue wandering around. Scottsmum, I think you should send you comments to the organisers. I'm serious, not having a go. You were so right in that: "Sad thing is that this poor vendor = lower crowd = less vendor choice problem is a self fulfilling prophecy." I have to say that I too wondered about having both SASH and ARF - I have been to both many times over the years and both are excellent. The guys with the runs and the very large dude chilling in one (was he a Pitbull? Gorgeous) were there on Saturday. I'd like to see the area where they do the parades, flyball, dancing, etc in a different space. I have no idea where, of course, as I don't know what is beyond that. I just feel it could have a bit more razzamatazz. The sound system is always very poor.

I can't agree, kelpiecuddles. There are always ways and means. I would imagine the overriding factor governing the execution (as Kirislin called) of Marius would be money. All zoos have databases on their breeding programs of the animals and it would have taken a few minutes or less to find a place where Marius's genetics would not have posed a problem. And if there wasn't a place, well they should have let him go to one of the places that wanted him and presumably they wouldn't have bred from him, but have let him live out his life in comfort and dignity. The whole business is beyond disgusting and I hope the zoo is well and truly ashamed of what it has done.
