Kill List Frustrations
Loving my Oldies replied to HappyCamper's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Wise words, Steve. But let's face it, the holier than thous always need to point out others' foibles whist forgetting their own  -
Deepest sympathies, Lokelani. Your Bosco was a beautiful beautiful boy. I'm glad you came back to talk about your loss. In my experiience, talking about our loved ones somehow keeps them alive and as that is all we have, that is what we do. Run free, Bosco - hope you find Loki.

My Greyhounds Were Attacked Today :(

Just spewing out more of the usual. -
So beatutiful. Look at that little black and white King of the Playing Pole

Is it just for cats and kittens, Casowner? I know pounds do it all the time and lots of rescue groups/people too, but I could never rehome a dog without looking at the prospective home or having someone I trusted do it for me.

That's it. Thank you. And for those who might like to see it again too: http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/253308-our-old-boy-ryan/page__p__6343068__fromsearch__1#entry6343068

A DOLer posted some truly beautiful photographs of her young daughter and her Collie dog recently. I don't know why, but memory of it popped into my head last night and I really wanted to feast my eyes on those photographs again. Naturally, my memory won't co-operate when trying to recall the poster. Help please :) :)

Really Dogmad, when Czzzy said "another rant", she was referring to her own story. -
Photographs of victims aren't often released and I guess this is from the point of privacy and, frankly, some would be just too horrific . I remember years ago when my sister's dog (mini Poodle) just put his paws up on the chair arm where dad's arm was resting - tore into his arm quite unintentionally and dad was pretty stoic, but the wound was pretty awful. I'm glad I'm not alone . I was wondering whether I was becoming a bit obsessive. In today's society we seem to be very unhelpfully focussed on finding a single point of blame, sadly, thus the focus on breed rather than education.

I don't know about anyone else, but I am finding it hard to get this lady out of my mind. Remember the other thread where the jogger was jumped on by two dogs and the photographs of her face afterwards? Those dogs were on a lead and, although I don't know the full story, probably made only the one contact before being pulled back, but that woman was really badly wounded. Can you imagine the state this elderly lady must be in. Because of injuries from dog bites, gardening, etc, my right arms looks as though I might have been indulging in some self harm over the years - the smallest scratch seems to leave a scar these days on my ageing flesh. I am not being a ghoul, but it crossed my mind yesterday that photographs of this lady might give some people a terrible shock and make them realise the damage dogs can do - whether by accident or intent. Of course action like that can backfire, but how on earth do you get people to understand the responsibility of owning dogs?

16 D Questions
Loving my Oldies replied to HappyCamper's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
As I have never investigated the requirements or exemptions of aClause 16(d), I didn't know that. But I always believed in doing as much as the paperwork as possible to ensure it actually gets done. -

Yes, it is sad, strange, maybe fickle and flakey, but it all very well for those of us who have been involved in pounds and rescuing and fostering dogs for yonks to sit in judgement of the general public. They just don't know. And why or how should they? Not everyone goes in for hours/days/weeks of research before they buy something. ETA: It seems to me that for many people a dog is a dog is a dog. You want a dog? Go to the pound, pet shop, breeder. Yep, like the look of that one. Yes, many of us can see the perils and pitfalls, but for most people that is how it works. If you care, you just plod on trying to educate and make a difference, person by person. -
Terrific Where is that?

Neighbours Large Dog Can Get Into My Yard If It Wants
Loving my Oldies replied to a topic in General Dog Discussion
Ah, I see. Different story - you will need the RE lady to help get in a fencer or odd job man. Hope you get action quickly. In the meantime, as others have suggested, talk to the neighbours. Could they do anything temporary from their side? -
16 D Questions

Oh yes. Forgotten that - it's been a while. Most important not to leave any paperwork for the new owner to do. You try not to leave anything to chance. I used to physically take all the paperwork to the Council when I moved to my current home. Keep notes and photocopies of everything. Councils can be pretty slack too: I remember being told by someone (forget who and which council now) that all the change of owner forms were in a big box in a corner and if/when anybody felt like it, they'd enter a few in the database -
Neighbours Large Dog Can Get Into My Yard If It Wants

Don't wait for RE Lady. Put up some wire netting or stretch trellis. The latter would be more difficult to install, though. Dog may be the friendliest dog in the world, but you have tiny littlies. Many large dogs know instinctively to moderate their behaviour around little dogs and puppies, some don't. -

Another thing just to keep in your knowledge bank: don't spend the adoption fee before the trial period is over LOL. If someone who has taken a dog on trial rings you and says it isn't working out, you will very quickly learn to diferentiate between those who have discovered a) they don't really want a dog, b) they don't want this particular dog c) are not interested in making it work and those who need a little bit of help and want that help. With a), b) and c) I never bothered to ask questions, because I quickly realised it was a waste of time; I would just give them back the adoption fee and take the dog. Just remembered you aren't new to the process, so you are probably totally aware of the pitfalls LOL. -
Yep! There's life in the old dog yet. (Original saying I just made up  .)

16 D Questions
Loving my Oldies replied to HappyCamper's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I'm sure others more up to date than I can answer these questions, but when I was rescuing/rehoming, I had a contract, held over submitting the paperwork untl the end of the 2 weeks' trial. The contract had all the detail that could possibly be thought of (and then some LOL). I haven't looked at it for a couple of years, but the website Rescue Rex had a section devoted to paperwork: forms etc. Might still be there. I am pretty sure that somewhere within the Companion Animals Act all these sorts of requirements are detailed. I would have thought that if and when your application is approved all these questions would be answered in the accompanying paperwork. I have never had a 16D myself: just worked with people/rescuers who did. -
Very stern message for Woof: do not move without your video securely attached to your person LOL. Gorgeous fatties, Woof. Laminitis sounds horrible and very painful
-
Oh, thanks HW. I didn't hear that. I hope the authorities have more guts than Gosford had shown and tracks them down.

Jeez, I must be getting old . I have little tearies reading about how the day worked out. I can just SEE the little girl so thrilled and puffed up about what a great dog trainer she is going to be   I'd love to by a fly on the wall in that household over the next couple of days. Trinabean and Bruno: take a bow !! So glad you didn't listen to MY advice, but went with your instincts and recognised your own and Bruno's abilities.

Where did you read this? I can't find it in any of the articles online Yes, I was a bit mystified by this statement by Dogmad as well. For the last few days, I have had the television on most of the time as I come and go from the house (on ABC 1 or ABC24) so lots of snippets of news, but haven't heard that one. ETA: when the shocking news was first broadcast, I did hear neighbours being interviewed saying that there had been lots of big dogs over the years and many of them had caused problems by getting out and frightening people

That was the second attack, one where a dog attacked a couple of their dog in Redfern.

Penny is a total knockout, K. You will have wonderful memories and such stunning photographs to look at. I hope St Francis makes it easier for you and you will recognise that the time has come. In the meantime, we all here know that Penny lives with the most wonderful mum and she could not be more loved and cherished that she is.
