Anyone Clipped A Chow Chow ?
Rysup replied to charlie mouse's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
They generally do. I used to clip 2 pet Chows every November. They grew back fine. But as JulesP said, its a horrid job to do, and I never looked forward to it! -
I've only been able to buy turkey necks from a localish pet food place and they are like $3.95/kg

Thank you everyone. We are still reeling from her loss.....her best buddy does not know what to do with himself, and my OH is so upset. He told me tonight he didn't realise how much he loved her until she is not here anymore. I loved showing her, she had really started to come into her own, she had just started to do a bit of winning, but most of all she was a great pet, such a happy, bubbly personality. Sometimes I wish it was just a bad dream and I could wake up from the nightmare.

I used to groom a BC who was regularly clipped, and in the end they had to keep doing it because his coat would not grow back normally. It was patchy and uneven. I dont recommend it either - he can better control his temperature with his coat on.

Yep my dogs all live healthy lives on dry food and bones. The adults get Great Barko/Uncle Albers and the youngest are on Advance Puppy Rehydratable and Eagle Pack Puppy. Oldest here at the moment is 12, youngest 6 weeks.

I don't know that its "wrong" per say, but it wont have the desired effect. It wont teach the puppy not to pee inside, it will just teach her to not pee in front of your friend!

I do it if there is a dog with funny ears....never hurt them yet, and I'm pretty sure a vet told me to do it. Not sure it is on the pack though.

Most flea treatments are 12 weeks plus yes, there are a few you can use younger, but not many. Once your puppy has settled in, you can wean him onto the food you want. Dont let the vet scare you. We brought a new puppy home last weekend, and he got the runs for a few days, but he settled down and is fine now. The only think I did was stop any milk. I kept up the dry food, as that was what he was used to. It may just be the stress of all the change - I had a dog once who would get the runs at every single show we went to. For his first year of life. Go to the show, runny poo all over his trousers. Without fail. I got very good at washing his bum before we went in the ring!! He did out grow it eventually.

Thanks guys. We really are at a bit of a loss. She was such a lovely girl too. Life isnt fair sometimes.

Yesterday morning in a tragic accident, our 1 year old Amstaff Amy was taken from us. RIP Sweet Girl, we all miss you so terribly much. With the angels now.

I dont think you brush them?? I saw a sight with Puli grooming the other day, let me see if I can find it for you..... OK here you are - http://www.puliworld.com/puliworld/grooming.html

Having breastfed myself, I can attest to it coming out all on its own LOL But yes I would think that they would not get enough, especially once the initial engorgement had been relieved. They would not get that nice rich hind milk, and would fall behind very quickly. My litter (5 weeks now) gained no weight for 10 days and the first thing the vet did was check for clefts.
-
I have always been under the impression a cleft baby feeding exclusively on the mother would have died before 3 weeks, because without sealed suction, milk normally does not come out of the bitch. Put your finger in his mouth, nail down, and see if he gets strong suction.

I find on dark dogs if you flip them over you will see flea actively on the tummy much easier.....same as for fluffies.

My 4 month old is teething. How do I know? Well apart from her bat ears, she nipped my hand the other day and left a tooth behind!!! LOL

German Spitz DO like the sound of their own voices, I am afraid. One reason I would not have one where I am right now. I would think about crate training her. Definately. I hope the barking quietens down for you - we picked up a new puppy on Saturday and he is great overnight now, barks a bit in the day but its only playing with the other dogs through the fence, and I am home most of the time so I dont let him carry on, but if my neighbours had anything to complain about they would, and I would not get the benefit of a note in the letter box!!!! They go straight to council.

I personally would not use a slicker on a BC, but if you do go with the grain, and yep work in layers. You might find a rake works better in taking out the undercoat. I only ever washed and blow dried the BC's I groomed, that got all the coat out.

If I want to use a tinned food I just use Puppy Pal.

Thanks Sheree! Cool Dogcop, I was looking at the Wheelie Bin stuff the other day - is it the cleaner or the fly repellant one?
-
ahh glad you worked it out!

What sort of paper are you using? My pixma works great, though must say I dont tend to use it for prints, I prefer my Kodak printer for that.

Thanks everyone for your advice, I actually went to the supermarket and bought some Capstar last night. All the young dogs have been treated with the Frontline spray, but I have found fleas back on them after 2 weeks, it has been very frustrating. We dont have carpet, so I am assuming the fleas are living in the lounge and the one rug we have, so I will try the salt thing, see if that helps. Sheree where would I find the KO?
-
Well we normally get the odd few fleas as the weather warms up but the last few weeks has seen an explosion. We have sprayed the yards and kennels twice, with no effect. Any suggestions anyone? I used some Frontline I had, but that lasts all of 2 weeks at the most, so I have ordered some Advantage online. But wondered if there were any other remedies people use. I have never had fleas this bad ever. I am also going to bomb the house even though we only have a litter inside at the moment, but I want to treat all the dogs first. I thought spraying the yards would help but thats made no difference what so ever.

I swear by Pedigree Advance Puppy Rehydratable - soak it until its mushy, either in puppy formula (I use Wombaroo) or hot water. They LOVE it. My current litter are fully weaned at 4 weeks (but I have been hand raising them), I started them on solids as soon as their eyes opened, so about 15 days old.
