Shiny Coat, What A Dream.
Rysup replied to OZ Grooming World's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
He is a coated breed that blows coat - how old is he? Dogs will change coat roughly once a year; Bitches twice a year. And if you think his coat is dry then he NEEDS conditioning, and more than a very quick one. A leave in conditioner would be helpful and help protect his coat from sun damage. If you dont condition you will get a fluffy coat rather than the shiny hair you want. My Kees dont eat anything special - Coprice Family dry and thats all except for the odd raw meaty bone. They are bathed in Wool Wash & #1 All Systems Whitening & Brightening Shampoo, then a Bluo rinse put through. They are not conditioned from either inside or out, and I have nice shiny coats. I think you can feed all you want, and use all the product in the world, some dogs just dont have a shiny coat. -
All of my Amstaff puppies have knuckled over around 10 weeks of age. I just cut back their food for 2 or 3 weeks and the problem resolved itself. I think vets would be quick to assume its something more - cut back her food and wait a few weeks before making any rash decisions.

Knuckling over.....cut back on her food for a while and it should go.

The ears are about the only bit of the dog that can easily be nicked with the clippers, and I always use extra caution around them for that reason.

The OP never said they wanted to groom so that the dog looked like a show dog. I think that they can keep their pet comfortable quite easily on their own. And with time they would develop the ability to style the dog so it did look like a show dog. I always loved doing the schnauzers, I used to do a Giant, two Standards and a lot of minis. The owners loved how I did them, especially the lady with the two Standards who had been hacked to bits by the previous groomer she had used. I even do my retired Lhasa's in a Schnauzer trim. I am in no way suggesting they learn how to hand strip and be able to present a show Schnauzer, but the OP asked if it was possible to keep her dogs comfortable on her own. And it is.

I dont think keeping a Schnauzer clipped yourself is hard. Used to do mobile grooming, but if you are shown how to use the clippers, its NOT hard at all.

Well mine must be a BARF shop one too, its REALLY old though. But the plastic has held up great, it would be about 15 years at least old, maybe a bit more, I got it 2nd hand

I tend to agree Oakway. People seem to think its cruel, but only because they think the dogs are made silent and cannot communicate anymore. In my 18 years of showing dogs I have only seen 2 truly silent dogs. Most can still bark, its just toned down, and does not travel as far. They make you jump through hoops to have the procedure done, yet its far less painful or "cruel" than a desexing op.

I also recommend the vet in West Wollongong. Any vet requires a stat dec to do a debark. PM if you want the vets details.

Who me? Never!!

You are an amazing trainer Nik! Jedi is just awesome

Eeeek no! Get them removed by the vet! I have never heard such a thing, and ouchies, I think it might hurt a bit.
-
Dont you use the same entry forms as for shows? They do up here in NSW.........

We had a pool shop replace our pump many years ago, I dont recall the cost, but they installed all this new piping so that it was easier to remove the pump in the future. No problems since, just the heater keeps karking it, so gave up on that!

Lots of brushing to stimulate the skin, is about the only thing I suggest. Or massage with your fingers.

I cant vote, you need an N/A option in the raw questions. I feed dry mainly.

There is NO test for Epilepsy in dogs. They can only rule out all other possible causes and even then, it can really only be diagnosed through autopsy. Kees breeders the world over are praying for a DNA marker in our breed. A test would be great, but it just is not there. Best of luck Kirislin.

Ummm the price? Not a lot of difference if you ask me.

I am a total NON plucker. I have never plucked my Lhasa's ears ever and never had any issues. Ever.
-
He may just be a bit slow? My oldies tend to change coat a little later each year.

Oh Bellatrix, I am so sorry I am in tears here, for you, for Lucy, for Marc, even for your MIL. We recently lost a 2nd dog to a car. It is just a freak accident. No one is to blame, and I hope you can forgive, in time. RIP Lucy.

Teaching Your Dog To Gait Faster
Rysup replied to doglova's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
What breed is she? Not all breeds should be moved at speed. -
Some do have heat settings, and they do tend to warm up after a bit of use. In Darwin, I would not worry about a blow dry either

That makes a bit more sense When I was grooming for a living, I just used a force dryer with a hand held hose. Only have the stand dryer at home, and even then I have a hose attachment on that too. There is enough fluffing happening with a force dryer.
