Does anyone have a recommendation for a site to buy lenses thru, I want a 70 - 300mm Lense but not so willing to pay $1200 for it... I did find a few online for as cheap as $400 but not sure if its a safe option.. Reccommend please!

try here. I bought my camera from them.

just remember with these that there s a reason these lenses are so much cheaper - they are mass produced general public type lenses, so glass not as good, and at its longest (300 mm), you have an aperture of 5.6 as the biggest you can go, which means the lens sweet spot might only be F8 - you would need very good light or a very high ISO to get a fast shutter speed here. If you are going to be using it where you can't use a tripod, and need to have a high shutter, it might be worth saving the bikkies to get a lens that can go to 2.8 instead. Not necessarily what you want to hear, but if you are wanting this length, you need to consider the pros and cons of saving on the lenses vs what it can then do

Most agility is outdoors isn't it? I think a f5.6 lens is fine for someone just starting out. I did all my first dog shows/lure coursing shots using the Canon 70-300mm f5.6 and it was fine. I wouldn't get a total el cheapo (the 75-300 had a bad rep) but most people starting out cannot afford a 300 2.8. There isn't even a zoom I know of that covers that?

I got the impression smisch has a nikon, not sure though.

Yeah I think so but as far as I know they don't have a zoom with a reach of 300mm that is f2.8. It'd be big!

Linda - yeah I thought so, but I think with something like agility, 200mm is quite short and as it's outside I'd also much rather have the reach of 300mm, f5.6 or not.

Linda atm I'm using a 55-200 and its just that little short.. I can get amazing photos on it but not as close as I'd like...

Atm I'm just more looking for a cheaper alternative.. May head back to where I got my camera from and see if they can do me a deal on a lens..

Thanks everyone

can I just ask...do you mean the lens/camera's from say DWI aren't as good as the one's you would buy from say Camera house...or do you just mean the cheaper type lens in general aren't as good a quality ?

thanks

thanks Kja that's what i wanted to know...... I thought I might have miss read what LindaK was talking about.....doesn't take much to muddle me :cheer: I have been buying my camera and lens from DWI and very happy with them not to mention the prices :)

I have been looking at a couple of others from there

100mm 2.8L IS macro...... and have been reading about the 135mm 2.0L ( but no IS on these..which makes me think if I would be steady enough :D )

The 135L 2.0 is a dreamy lens. But it's a biatch and a half to hand hold steady. You've gotta have that shutter way up. And you need to be comfortable knowing you're going to miss focus now and again. It's one lens everyone agrees on - absolutely fabulous, but a steep learning curve just to get the technique of holding the damned thing down LOL

thanks again have read lots of good things about the 135.....I'm use to getting lots of hit and misses in the blur department

I have read great portrait but also good for action ????

maybe I would get to frustrated with one if hard to hold steady

sorry if I have hyjacked the thread

love the 135L myself, it is one of my most used lenses. Kristin was right though with what she said about what I said - that with lenses, there are the cheaper mass produced ones, that have plastic mounts, and glass that have a within a wider tolerance level of evenness compared to the more expensive lenses, so with those, it can be a lucky dip whether you get a good copy or not. Those are the ones that you generally find are the kit lenses or those that are the 5.6 or thereabouts, and can bit very hit or miss on the quality. The manufactures though generally figure I suppose that the people buying them are buying for cost, and are not as concerned over getting tack sharp images as near to 100% of the time as they can. Does not matter where these are bought from, the factory process in producing them is still the same.

a bit of weight lifting training, and you will be fine!!!! For me its actually more of a shock when I whack the 50mm lens on the camera, as it is so light, it becomes more like "why it this so easy to lift?" Oh that's right, the heavy lens is in the bag!!! Echo Kristins call though - f you are not sure what will work, and are on limited funds, trying one out by renting is a great way to test a potential without dropping a bucket of money first

I'm use to a bit of weight with the camera...it feels really strange to put the 50mm on camera feels to light

I don't think we have anywhere round me that hires lens...I did google but nothing came up..but thanks for the great suggestion will look further into it

Darn DWI makes it so tempting to try new lens :D

have a great day and thanks for taking the time to answer my questions
