Kirislin
Is the difference worth the $$ you have to spend? I understand the 1.8 is very plasticky but how much difference in the results. Has anyone used both?
Kirislin
I'm getting itchy! cant wait! been pricing for "in stock" and I am sorry to say HN can do the 1.8 cheapest. It's comparable to the online stores once they include shipping costs.
chezzyr
What are HN asking for it?

Kirislin
so, if you could afford to would you buy the 1.4 or is the 1.8 good enough.
Guest Tess32
If I had the money I'd get the 1.4 as the 1.8's can be kinda dodgy, and many have focusing issues. If you get a good one, great, but some are less than reliable.
Kirislin
thanks Tess, I think everyone else must be hotfootin' to to HN
Tokkie
I'm stalking your post again.... HN - Harvey Norman?
chezzyr
I don't need to hotfoot it to HN Depends how much you want to use it also, if you want it to be your everyday lens you might prefer something built heavier etc. but if you get the 1.8 and its a good one (test it out at the store!) you will have alot of fun with it

Kirislin
I think I've made my decision. You shall have to wait until I've been, bought and photographed. watch this space. Oh and I just found this written by Ashanali a couple of days ago for others thinking about these lenses. the price difference between the 1.2, 1.4 and 1.8 is due to many factors (if you are talking about Canon). The 1.2 is an L series lens. These are top of the line, with high quality glass 1.4 is also high quality but a step down from the 1.2 and doesn't have that lovely 'L' tag attached. (whilst I would love a 1.2 the actual difference in output is negligible between the two. I bought the 1.4 ) the 1.8 is very lightweight and cheaply made. Lots of plastic. A great lens for those shooting on a budget. Edited November 30, 2008 by Kirislin
chezzyr
FWIW I think the 1.8 would give you a good idea of a fast lense's capabilities but make a much smaller dent in the budget. If you find you are using it alot and enjoying it you can always 'upgrade' later. I have never owned a 1.4 myself so can't comment
ruthless
136 after haggling. if you can get it cheaper let me know. $134+ $20 postage [there may be a 5% discount, but you'll have to check and do the maths yourself!]
Ashanali
Yes, I know where it is cheaper http://www.shopbot.com.au/p-32489.html I haven't used the place that has then for $119 but they seem to be popular. I have used cameras direct and they are brilliant. Next day delivery in most cases.

Kirislin
OK, I went, I bought, I photographed. Meet the new love of my life. THE 50MM 1.4!!!!!!! as soon as I got in the car I put it on and took these of Kibah and no I am not loaded but about 4 years ago a really good friend gave me a couple of hundred $$ to put towards something "arty". I'd kept the money aside for all these years as I didn't want to just spend it on everyday items so I decided to use it to go towards this lens. I figured I would probably use it alot from what I'd read everyone had said about it so decided to buy the one that will hopefully last longer. I called around to her place on my way home to tell her I'd spent her money and I took this pic of her flowers and another in her garden and when I got home one of Feather with a dead duck, but she is listening to a big fat blow fly that was behind her. It's dead now, Puck ate it 1st two of Kibah are from flickr, the rest are photobucket so aren't as clear. I just have to practice now. He said I got the last one at the old price, they are now going up about $100 but the 1.8 is still good value, I just decided to use that money I mentioned otherwise I dont think I could've got it. the pics look much clearer on my computer. When flickr lets me back in I will upload them there and you will see the difference. I am so excited
